BREAKING: INEC Electoral Commissioner Slumps, Dies In Abuja

On Monday evening, a sad incident transpired involving Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State.

Barrister ‘Niyi Ijalaye, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Ogun State at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has passed away.

Ijalaye collapsed and died in Abuja on Monday evening, shortly after attending a meeting of Resident Electoral Commissioners at the Commission’s headquarters. The exact cause of his death is not yet known.

Sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed that Ijalaye had returned to his hotel room in the Federal Capital Territory after the meeting when the incident occurred. He was reported to have been in good spirits throughout the meeting, which was focused on the off-cycle governorship elections in Edo and Ondo States, as well as seven vacant positions in the National and State Assemblies.

Photos posted on INEC’s official Facebook page show Ijalaye, dressed in a blue striped kaftan with a red cap, participating in the meeting.

Ijalaye, originally from Ondo State, was appointed as the Ogun State REC in March 2022, following the transfer of his predecessor, Olusegun Agbaje, to Lagos State.
