President Bola Tinubu has called on the Nigerian Judiciary to uphold its standards and resist criticism from those who only challenge the system when outcomes do not favor them.
Addressing the issue through Vice President Kashim Shettima, President Tinubu made this statement at the public presentation of “Judging With Justice,” an autobiography of the immediate past Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, held in Abuja.
“I urge the Nigerian judiciary to live up to its constitutional mandate and ignore those who never see anything good in the judiciary unless the pendulum of justice swings their way,” Tinubu said.

President Bola Tinubu has assured that the pensions of judicial officers are now secure, with retired justices set to receive their final salaries as lifelong pensions.
The announcement was made at the public presentation of “Judging With Justice,” an autobiography of the retiring Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Olukayode Ariwoola. The event, chaired by former Head of State Abdusalami Abubakar, took place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja, shortly after Justice Ariwoola’s official retirement.
Notable guests included Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun (the recommended successor to Justice Ariwoola), Federal Capital Territory Minister Nyesom Wike, the Ooni of Ife, and various Justices of the Supreme and Appeal Courts.

In a statement issued by his media aide, Ajuri Ngelale, President Tinubu congratulated Justice Ariwoola on his retirement, praising his significant contributions to Nigerian jurisprudence and his leadership in the judiciary. He expressed gratitude for Ariwoola’s service and extended his best wishes for his future.
Justice Ariwoola, who was elevated to the Supreme Court in 2011 after serving in the Court of Appeal, was sworn in as Chief Justice of Nigeria in 2022 by former President Muhammadu Buhari. He has served in various judicial capacities throughout his career.
President Tinubu is set to swear in Justice Ariwoola’s successor at the State House Council Chambers on Friday, August 23, 2024.
