Things You Didn’t Know About Justice Kekere-Ekun

Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun is one of the leading female Justices on Nigeria’s Supreme Court. Born on May 7, 1958, she earned her law degree from the University of Lagos and was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1981.

She later obtained an LL.M. from the London School of Economics and Political Science in November 1983.

Her legal career began as a private lawyer in Lagos from 1985 to 1989.

In December 1989, she was appointed Senior Magistrate Grade II in the Lagos State Judiciary, and on July 19, 1996, she was elevated to Judge of the High Court of Lagos State.

During this period, she also served as Chairman of the Robbery and Firearms Tribunal in Ikeja, Lagos from November 1996 to May 1999.

Justice Kekere-Ekun was appointed to the Court of Appeal on September 22, 2004, where she served in various divisions and as presiding Justice of the Makurdi and Akure Divisions.

She was elevated to the Supreme Court of Nigeria as its fifth female Justice, taking office on July 8, 2013.

Throughout her distinguished career, Justice Kekere-Ekun has participated in numerous courses and seminars both in Nigeria and internationally, receiving several merit awards. She is a Life Bencher and serves as the President of the International Association of Women Judges.

She is happily married and has children.
