Nigeria’s Onyinyechi Mark has set a new Paralympic record in the women’s 61kg powerlifting category with a remarkable lift of 145kg, surpassing the previous record held by fellow Nigerian Lucy Ejike.
With just one lift remaining, Mark has virtually secured Nigeria’s first gold medal at the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games.

Her closest competitor is aiming for 138kg on her final lift, while Mark is poised to extend her record with a final attempt of 147kg.
Nigeria has a proud history in the Paralympics, particularly in powerlifting and athletics. At the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics, the nation won ten medals, including four golds.
Athletes like Lucy Ejike and Bose Omolayo have set world records and achieved multiple gold medals, underscoring Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing and supporting its para-athletes.
