Victor Umeh, Senator representing Anambra Central, has stated that the Labour Party (LP) currently lacks effective leadership.
Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, Umeh, a prominent LP figure, addressed the ongoing crisis within the party.
The Labour Partyβs 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, along with other key stakeholders led by Abia State Governor Alex Otti, recently attempted to address the partyβs issues.

They convened an enlarged National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Umuahia to resolve the crisis stemming from the controversial national convention led by the Julius Abure-led National Working Committee (NWC).
During this meeting, Senator Nenadi Usman was appointed to lead an interim NWC with a 90-day mandate to organize party congresses and a national convention to elect new officers.
However, Callistus Uju Okafor, the factional acting Chairman, has rejected Usmanβs appointment, labeling the stakeholders’ meeting as illegal and unconstitutional. Similarly, Abureβs faction has also denounced the meeting.
In response, Senator Umeh emphasized that the party currently has no clear leadership and urged members to take responsibility for steering the party forward.
βPeople who are asking this question do not understand that when you donβt have a legitimate executive committee in charge of their party, the issue of whether the Constitution is followed or not will become unnecessary. We donβt have a legitimate executive committeenow.
βThose who are claiming to have the powers to do so have not told Nigerians that their tenure in office has since expired as a result of exhaustion of time and because they didnβt do what they were supposed to do to bring in a succeeding leadership in the party, the party is right now without leadership.
βThere must be a chairman of the party legitimately before you begin to complain about infractions on the constitution. Those who are raising these questions do not understand that they are no longer in place and if you are not in place, nature abhors a vacuum,β he said
Defending the Abia meeting, he argued that when there is no established leadership, party members have the authority to come together and establish a new leadership structure.
