Yunusa Tanko, a prominent member of the Labour Party, has stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is the sole authority that can determine the legality of the recent intervention in the party by Governor Alex Otti of Abia State and Peter Obi, the party’s 2023 presidential candidate.
The intervention led to the formation of a 29-member caretaker committee, chaired by former Finance Minister Nenadi Usman, to temporarily oversee the party’s affairs.

In response to questions about the legality of this intervention during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily on Monday, Tanko emphasized that only INEC has the authority to make that determination.
“It is left for INEC to look at the legality and make pronouncement. So, I have nothing to do with that at the moment because they are the electoral umpire. They know what the law says, it is better for them to make the pronouncement,” Tanko said.
Senator Darlington Nwokocha, a former Senate Deputy Minority Leader, has been appointed as the Secretary of the newly formed committee.

This committee, established following a meeting convened by Governor Alex Otti, is tasked with organizing elections for new party leadership within 90 days.
The committee includes representatives from various groups such as the NLC, TUC, Senate, House of Representatives, House of Assembly, and gubernatorial candidates from the last election.
In response, the Julius Abure-led leadership of the party has rejected the committee, deeming the meeting convened by Otti as illegal.
They have urged Nigerians to disregard any outcomes from the meeting.
A statement from the party’s publicity secretary, Obiora Ifoh, clarified that the meeting was not sanctioned by the party and does not represent its official stance or interests.
The Abure camp also expressed shock that “the so-called chairman of the caretaker committee is not a registered member of the Party. She surfaced during the Peter Obi Presidential Campaign to assist Peter Obi in his campaign.”
