Taylor Swift Endorses Candidate After Harris-Trump Debate

Taylor Swift announced on Tuesday that she is endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris for president, putting an end to speculation about her political stance ahead of the November election.

In a post on Instagram shortly after Harris’ debate with former President Donald Trump, Swift stated, “Like many of you, I watched the debate tonight. If you haven’t already, now is a great time to research the issues and the candidates’ positions on the topics that matter most to you. As a voter, I make sure to stay informed about their policies and plans for our country.”

Swift also addressed recent misinformation, revealing that an AI-generated endorsement of Donald Trump had been falsely attributed to her. “This made me realize the importance of being transparent about my own voting choices. The best way to counter misinformation is with the truth. I will be voting for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she wrote.

Harris, who became the Democratic Party’s nominee in early August after President Joe Biden exited the 2024 race, selected Minnesota Governor Tim Walz as her running mate. Swift praised this choice, saying, “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she stands up for the rights and causes I care about. She is a steady, skilled leader, and I believe we can achieve so much more with calm rather than chaos. I’m also impressed by her selection of @timwalz, who has long advocated for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body.”

Swift encouraged her followers, especially first-time voters, to register and vote early. “I’ll link information on how to register and find early voting dates in my story,” she added.

Ending her post with a nod to a phrase used by Sen. JD Vance, Trump’s running mate, to criticize Democrats, Swift referred to herself as a “childless cat lady.”

Swift, who had previously supported Biden and Harris in the 2020 election, had largely remained silent on political matters until the 2018 midterms, when she endorsed Democratic candidates in Tennessee. Since then, she has been a vocal advocate for Democratic policies, women’s rights, reproductive health, and LGBTQ+ rights.

In her 2020 documentary “Miss Americana,” Swift expressed regret for not speaking out on political issues sooner, sharing with her father her desire to “be on the right side of history.”

A segment of Swift’s supporters, known as Swifties, has formed an online community called Swifties for Kamala, which emerged following Biden’s endorsement of Harris. The group, not affiliated with Swift, has garnered significant support, raising over $122K during its August kickoff call. Speakers included Sen. Elizabeth Warren and singer Carole King. Irene Kim, communications director of Swifties for Kamala, stated, “We believe Harris-Walz will fight for our rights and the rights of our loved ones, and help make this country safer for everyone.”
