The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) suffered a significant setback in Owan as a three-time member and former Deputy Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Omon Ezomon, resigned from the party.
Ezomon, who represented Owan West Constituency from 1999 to 2007, cited internal crises within the PDP as the reason for his departure.
His resignation is expected to weaken the party’s already diminishing influence in the area, where the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbebaku, claims authority.

In a letter dated September 16, 2024, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ward 5, Avbiosi, Iuleha, Owan West LGA, Ezomon announced his decision to leave the party, effective immediately.
He said his decision came after “considerable reflection” and consultations, citing his alienation from the decision-making processes at various levels of the party.
Ezomon expressed frustration over being sidelined by the party’s leadership, despite his contributions to the PDP’s growth and development.
He criticized “neophytes” who, despite his status as a founding member and two-term elected representative, now dominate the party’s local leadership.

He also raised concerns about the unresolved internal conflicts within the PDP, warning that the ongoing strife could harm the party’s chances in the upcoming gubernatorial election.
“I am deeply saddened by the glaring disunity and lack of leadership that have foisted division within the ranks of the party. For my own peace of mind and mental health, I have made the painful decision to leave,” Ezomon stated in the letter.
Despite his departure, Ezomon was diplomatic in his parting words, expressing gratitude for the opportunities the PDP had given him and extending his best wishes to the leadership of Ward 5 for their future endeavors.
His defection has sent ripples through the political landscape of Edo State, with analysts speculating on his next move.
There is growing speculation that Ezomon might realign with the All Progressives Congress (APC), a possibility that could further shift the balance of power in the state.
