Former Vice President and 2023 presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Atiku Abubakar, is facing political headwinds as his home state of Adamawa shifts its support to Umar Damagum, the embattled acting national chairman of the party, complicating his 2027 presidential ambitions.
While Atiku opposes the idea of a North-East candidate holding the national chairman position, the Adamawa State chapter of the PDP has backed the region to produce a candidate for the role.
During a press conference in Yola on Wednesday, the state PDP chairman, Abubakar Shehu, affirmed the chapter’s strong support for Damagum as the next national chairman.

“The Constitution of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) clearly states the position of the existing vacancy. Section 47(6) states this:”
“Where a vacancy occurs in any of the offices of the party, the Executive Committee at the appropriate level shall appoint another person from the area or zone where the officer originated from to serve out the tenure of the officer.”
Shehu emphasized that, in line with the party’s constitutional provisions, the Adamawa State chapter fully supports Governor Ahmadu Fintiri and other PDP governors in endorsing Umar Damagum to complete the tenure of the ousted national chairman, Dr. Iyorchia Ayu.
He added, “The former national chairman is from the North- East. Therefore, Sen. Umar IIiya Damangun, the deputy national chairman of the northern zone, is most qualified to serve out the tenure of the former national chairman.”
