FIFA Bans Cameroon Football Federation President Samuel Eto’o, Gives Reason

FIFA handed a six-month ban to Cameroon football federation president Samuel Eto’o on Monday due to his behavior during a Women’s Under-20 World Cup match.

The former Barcelona player was found guilty of breaching FIFA’s regulations concerning “offensive behavior, violation of fair play principles, and misconduct by players and officials.”

The incident occurred during Cameroon’s last-16 match against Brazil, which ended in a 3-1 victory for the South Americans after extra time.

Eto’o and the Cameroon delegation were angered by a penalty decision that led to Brazil’s equalizer during the match, played in Bogota, Colombia, on September 11.

As part of the ban, Eto’o is prohibited from attending any Cameroon national team matches—whether men’s or women’s, and at any age level.

However, the suspension does not impact his position as president of Cameroon’s football federation, Fecafoot.

Earlier in July, Eto’o was fined $200,000 by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) over an ethics violation tied to a brand deal with an online gambling company.

Elected Fecafoot president in 2021, he has also clashed with Cameroon’s sports ministry, criticizing their appointment of Belgian Marc Brys as the men’s national team coach, calling it “illegal.”
