The immediate past governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom, revealed that God instructed him not to contest any elections in 2027.
Ortom made this statement on Tuesday in Makurdi during a courtesy visit by the G-14 members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a group of elders from the 14 Tiv-speaking local government areas in Benue State.
The former governor said he had no choice but to respect God’s directive. He acknowledged that his failure to consult God before entering the 2023 election contributed to his defeat.
Ortom also emphasized the PDP’s commitment to reclaiming the Benue Government House in 2027.

“I’m not contesting the 2027 election. I knew why I lost the election in 2023. I didn’t consult God. My people purchased the forms for me, and I accepted them without consulting God.
“God has revealed everything to me. He has asked me to wait for him,” he said.
Mr. Samuel Ortom further revealed that during his tenure as governor, he made significant sacrifices, often prioritizing state matters over his family and friends.

The former governor pledged his continued support for the party, emphasizing that no individual’s ambition should outweigh the party’s interests.
He also shared that after leaving office, he initially intended to take a sabbatical, but the party elders opposed the idea.
Ortom reiterated that no one, not even he as the party leader, has the authority to disband the respected PDP G-14 group.
“As a leader of the party in the state, I lack the powers to dissolve the group. So nobody can disband this group.
“G-14 is the elders forum of the PDP in Benue. If anything must happen, I must know first because I am the leader,” he said.
Speaking on the upcoming congresses, Samuel Ortom stated that the national secretariat had already given approval for the ward and local government congresses in Benue, with the state congress scheduled for October 3rd.
He mentioned that he had discussions with Senators Gabriel Suswam and Abba Moro, and they had all agreed to promote consensus as much as possible, recognizing their position as the opposition.
