Ethiopian Lawmakers Select New President

Ethiopian lawmakers on Monday elected Foreign Minister Taye Atske Selassie as the country’s new president, a largely ceremonial position, leaving Africa with only one female head of state.

Atske Selassie succeeds Sahle-Work Zewde, 74, a distinguished diplomat who had served as president since 2018. With her departure, Tanzania remains the only African nation with a woman president, Samia Suluhu Hassan.

Sahle-Work’s presidency began shortly after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed took office in 2018.

Her appointment, along with Abiy’s economic reforms, a gender-balanced cabinet, and a peace agreement with Eritrea, helped boost Abiy’s international image, culminating in his Nobel Peace Prize.

However, the devastating war in the Tigray region from 2020 to 2022 and continued ethnic conflicts have severely tarnished Abiy’s global reputation, leading to U.S. sanctions.

Taye, 68, is Ethiopia’s fifth president under its current constitution, enacted in 1995. He may serve for two six-year terms.

Appointed foreign minister in February, he has also held diplomatic roles as ambassador to the United Nations and Egypt.
