Indian industrialist Ratan Tata, renowned for transforming the Tata Group into a globally recognized conglomerate, passed away at the age of 86, the company announced late Wednesday.
Under Tata’s leadership, the company expanded into a vast international enterprise with a diverse portfolio, including software and luxury automobiles.
“It is with deep sorrow that we say goodbye to Mr. Ratan Naval Tata, an extraordinary leader whose immense contributions have shaped not only the Tata Group but also the nation itself,” said Tata Group chairman N. Chandrasekaran in a statement. “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we uphold the values he championed.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hailed Tata as “a visionary business leader, a compassionate soul, and an extraordinary human being.”
He praised Tata for providing stable leadership to one of India’s most esteemed business houses, expressing his deep sorrow at Tata’s passing and offering condolences to his family and friends in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
Born in 1937 in Bombay (now Mumbai), Tata initially aspired to be an architect. He was working in the United States when his grandmother, who raised him, requested he return to India to join the family business. Tata started his career in 1962 at TISCO (now Tata Steel), living in a hostel for apprentices and working on the shop floor near blast furnaces.
In 1991, he assumed leadership of the Tata Group, navigating the company through India’s era of free-market reforms. During his 21-year tenure, Tata expanded the conglomerate’s global presence, acquiring British luxury brands like Jaguar and Land Rover.
The Tata Group lauded his philanthropy, noting that his work “touched the lives of millions” and left a lasting impact in areas such as education and healthcare. “His initiatives have created a legacy that will benefit generations to come,” the company added.
Prime Minister Modi also reflected on Tata’s contributions beyond the business world, writing, “His impact went far beyond the boardroom. He endeared himself to many with his humility, kindness, and unwavering commitment to bettering society,” alongside a photograph of the two men smiling together.
