Tributes Pour In As Prominent Elder Statesman Dies

Tributes have poured in from friends, family, and prominent Nigerians following the death of elder statesman Ambassador Ahmed Alghazali, who passed away on Wednesday in Maiduguri, the capital of Borno State.

He was 86 years old and succumbed to a prolonged illness, leaving behind a wife and 12 children—four sons and eight daughters.

His funeral prayer was held at his family mosque in the Fizzan ward of old Maiduguri, and he was laid to rest around 4:39 PM at the Royal Cemetery (Kawur Maila), situated behind the Shehu of Borno’s palace.

In attendance were notable figures including Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, Senators Ali Ndume (APC, Borno South) and Kaka Shehu Lawan (APC, Borno Central), former Head of Service Professor Oladapo Afolabi, the Emir of Machina, and other high-ranking government officials.

Babagana Ahmed Alghazali, one of his sons, reflected on his father’s remarkable life, emphasizing that he did not accumulate wealth but devoted himself to serving Borno State and the nation. “He didn’t build or buy any house. He lived in a house given to him by his father until I purchased the one he occupied in GRA without his knowledge, which he discovered only after seven years,” he recounted.

Numerous tributes have also come in from distinguished Nigerians, including former presidents General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida and General Abdulsalami Abubakar, as well as General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), Chairman and CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

Ambassador Alghazali had a distinguished career, serving as a permanent secretary in five ministries before becoming the first Head of Service following the establishment of Borno State.

He also held the position of Nigerian Ambassador to Iran and Saudi Arabia and served as a national commissioner in the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). His last role before retirement in 2011 was as chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission.

Born in Marte in 1938, Alghazali hailed from one of Maiduguri’s prominent and educated families.

He began his primary education in Gaidam in 1947 and completed it in Nguru, where his father was stationed. Alghazali attended Borno Middle School and Barewa College before enrolling in the Nigerian College, where he was one of only 14 northerners among nearly 2,000 students.

The Borno Elders Forum expressed deep sorrow over Alghazali’s passing, with secretary and spokesman Dr. Bulama Mali Gubio praying for Allah (SWT) to grant him peace.

Tunji Olaopa, chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC), described Alghazali as an exemplary public servant, noting, “He devoted a significant part of his life to serving the country as an ambassador and through the FCSC, where he was a two-time chairman from 2001 to 2019.” He highlighted Alghazali’s commitment to maintaining political neutrality within the commission and his efforts to establish guidelines for appointment, promotion, and discipline in the service.

Neighbor Muhammad Bakura praised Alghazali’s humility and sincerity, stating, “We lost a kind-hearted man and a strong pillar in society. Many benefitted from government resources without him even knowing.”

On Friday, mosques across Maiduguri held prayers, asking Allah (SWT) to forgive his shortcomings and grant him entry into Jannatul Firdaus.
