BREAKING: Rivers Assembly Declares Pro-Fubara Lawmakers’ Seats Vacant, Gives Reason

The Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, has declared the seats of Edison Ehie, Chief of Staff to Governor Siminalayi Fubara, and three other pro-Fubara lawmakers vacant due to their absence from legislative sittings for 152 consecutive days.

During today’s plenary, Speaker Amaewhule explained that Ehie failed to formally notify the House of his new position, leading to the decision to vacate his seat.

As for Victor Oko-Jumbo and the two other lawmakers, the House held separate votes and declared their seats vacant for absenteeism, citing a violation of the 1999 Constitution, as they were absent for 152 days without proper notification or permission.

The Assembly resolved to notify INEC to conduct elections within 90 days to fill the now-vacant seats and ensure representation for their constituencies.

Additionally, the House agreed to give Governor Fubara another opportunity to present the 2024 Appropriations Bill, following the Appeal Court’s nullification of the N800 billion bill he had earlier presented to a parallel House led by Edison Ehie.
