Senate Passes Vote Of Confidence On Akpabio, Others

On Thursday, lawmakers in the Upper Chamber expressed unanimous confidence in Senate President Godswill Akpabio and the entire leadership of the 10th Senate.

The resolution came during a privilege matter raised by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi of Kebbi North, who addressed recent social media claims alleging that the Department of State Services (DSS) had taken control of the chambers due to an impending impeachment of the Senate President by Northern Senators.

Describing the allegations as a breach of his privilege, Senator Abdullahi condemned the reports as attempts to sow division and discord along ethnic and regional lines within the Senate.

He emphasized the need for the Upper Chamber to stand firm against any efforts that could undermine its unity or bring disrepute to its leadership.

This isn’t the first time rumors of impeachment have surfaced; Akpabio’s leadership faced similar threats in November 2023.

However, this marks the first occasion the lawmakers have formally passed a vote of confidence in the Senate President during the 10th Assembly.

‘We are here, doing our work very peacefully, oblivious of the mischief,’ Akpabio said during plenary on Wednesday.

He urged the public to disregard what he called fake news regarding the DSS’s alleged presence at the Assembly complex.
