Abia Government Announces When Workers Will Begin To Receive N70,000 Minimum Wage

The Abia State Government has announced that it will start implementing the new minimum wage of N70,000 for its workers beginning in October 2024.

This information was shared during a press briefing on Tuesday by the Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, after a State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti on Monday.

Kanu emphasized that this decision reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing the welfare of workers in the state.

“The state government is committed to the minimum wage, and within the next few days, payment of the new minimum wage will commence,” Kanu stated.

He also highlighted that although the national minimum wage serves as a benchmark, the state is ready to make adjustments as needed.

“If the governor wants to deviate from the national standard and pay higher, so be it,” Kanu added.

The Commissioner for Labour and Productivity, Sunny Onwuma, confirmed that Abia State is set to implement the N70,000 minimum wage for its workers.

In addition, Kanu announced that the government has approved the procurement of nine new road projects across the state’s three senatorial zones. He also highlighted the achievements of the “Clean Up Abia Initiative,” led by the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA), which has played a vital role in maintaining cleanliness in Aba, Umuahia, and Ohafia.

Kanu further shared that ASEPA has deployed over 100 waste receptacles statewide from July to September and has extended its cleanup efforts to the Lokpanta abattoir in Umunneochi LGA, as well as those in Uzuakoli and Arochukwu.

He added that the United Nations Habitat has invited the Greater Aba Development Authority and ASEPA to a conference in Egypt to showcase Abia’s success in environmental management.
