Senate Takes Action On NDLEA’s Drug Allegation Against Colleague

The Senate has formed a six-member ad hoc committee, led by Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, to investigate drug allegations against Deputy Senate Leader Senator Oyelola Yisa Ashiru (APC Kwara South).

This decision followed a “personal explanation” by Ashiru under Order 42 of the Senate rules, in which he claimed his privileges were violated by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

The NDLEA had stated that Ashiru’s house in Ilorin, Kwara State, was raided, resulting in the recovery of a consignment of drugs.

The agency’s chairman, Brig. Gen. Mohammed Buba Marwa, made these allegations during a press conference on Monday, where he was represented by Mr. Femi Babafemi, the agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy.

Marwa also mentioned that three of Ashiru’s aides were arrested, prosecuted, and sentenced, with one serving time since June.

During plenary last week, Senator Ashiru accused the NDLEA of corruption and compromise. Seeking protection from the Senate on Tuesday, he described the allegations as malicious, asserting that they were aimed at discrediting him and hindering his contributions to Senate debates.

Ashiru said, “I am 68 years now. I can assert that I don’t take alcohol; I don’t take drugs. I don’t get myself involved in these things; I don’t take cannabis.”

Responding, the Senate President Godswill Akpabio backed the senator, saying “Injury to one is injury to all.”

Akpabio said, “Anything you say here is covered by privilege; it is covered by immunity. In the Senate, we see you as a gentleman to the core.”

The Senate President tasked the ad hoc committee with summoning the leadership of the NDLEA to appear before the Senate and justify the allegations.

Akpabio warned that failure to provide adequate justification would result in severe consequences for the NDLEA.
