The lawmaker, who represents the Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State, announced his defection in a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during the plenary session on Wednesday.
Gumi cited ongoing internal and external crises within the PDP, which he claimed led to factional divisions in his constituency, resulting in two chairmen vying for party leadership.
The announcement was met with enthusiastic applause from APC members at the plenary.
However, the Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda, voiced his opposition, noting that the Nigerian Constitution mandates that any lawmaker who defects from their party risks losing their seat.
He urged the Speaker to declare Gumi’s seat vacant in line with constitutional provisions.
This defection comes less than two weeks after Gumi was appointed Chairman of the House Committee on the newly established North West Development Commission.Suleiman
