On Thursday, OpenAI significantly upgraded its ChatGPT AI chatbot by adding search engine capabilities, positioning it as a competitor to Google’s longstanding dominance in web search.
With this update, users can access “fast, timely answers” that include links to relevant web sources—information previously requiring a traditional search engine. ChatGPT can now provide real-time information from across the internet, making it more versatile.
The updated ChatGPT homepage includes new tabs that provide direct links to information on topics like weather, stock prices, sports scores, and breaking news.

These tabs link to content from providers with agreements with OpenAI, such as France’s Le Monde, Germany’s Axel Springer, and the UK’s Financial Times.
Examples of the new interface, as shown on OpenAI’s website, resemble Google’s search results and Google Maps but lack advertising clutter. They also bear similarity to Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine that delivers a conversational version of Google with cited sources.
Both OpenAI and Perplexity face legal challenges from the New York Times, alleging the unauthorized use of copyrighted content.
Instead of creating a separate product, OpenAI integrated search directly into ChatGPT for its paid users, with plans to expand it to free users.
The feature can be enabled by default or manually via a search icon. OpenAI also announced that any website or publisher could opt in to appear in ChatGPT’s search results, with OpenAI actively seeking feedback from content creators to refine the feature.
Until now, tools like ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude have had outdated information due to cutoff dates, limiting their accuracy.
This update addresses one of AI’s limitations, allowing ChatGPT to offer timely results—something only Google and Microsoft, with their search engine integrations, could previously provide.
For now, ChatGPT’s search results will remain ad-free, offering a cleaner interface than Google’s.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman shared his enthusiasm on X (formerly Twitter), calling search his “favorite feature” since ChatGPT’s launch in 2022, noting it as a “faster/easier way” to find information.
This launch also underscores OpenAI’s strategic relationship with Microsoft, a major investor with its own goals of challenging Google via Bing.
Altman’s vision is to make OpenAI an internet powerhouse, recently securing a $157 billion valuation in a funding round with investors like Microsoft, SoftBank, and Nvidia.
With the added search capabilities, OpenAI’s user base is likely to grow, though it will also drive up computing demands and costs.
