The All Progressives Congress (APC) has criticized Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, labeling him as an overambitious but unskilled promoter of his 2027 political aspirations.
Reports indicate that Makinde is eyeing a presidential run on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2027, positioning himself against President Bola Tinubu, who is also from the South-West region.
While acknowledging that Nigeriaās democratic system grants Makinde the freedom to pursue his ambitions, the APC argued that his apparent disregard for gubernatorial responsibilities in favor of personal aspirations disrespects the mandate of the people of Oyo State.
In a statement released Sunday by National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka, the APC stated that during a recent event in Ibadan, Makinde accused the APC of causing internal issues within his party, the PDP, as well as in other opposition groups.
Morka added that Makinde further claimed that his alliance with the Osun governor to strengthen the PDP in the South-West would proceed regardless of the APCās influence.
He said: āIf Makinde knew how best to keep APCās influence at bay, why has he not executed that strategy in āprotectionā of his party nationally? Like the proverbial lousy workman who blames his tools, Makinde and his co-confused leaders of the PDP should quit pointing fingers at the APC and take full responsibility for their disgraceful failure to handle the partyās implosion and decay.
āMakindeās unhinged 2027 ambition cannot be founded upon his unguarded and unjustified attacks against our great Party or the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu that has launched the boldest and most ambitious reform effort in history to transform our countryās economy and build a solid foundation for progress.
āGovernor Makinde has failed to prove himself as an effective leaderāhis lacklustre performance as Governor speaks for itself and undermines his credibility. Instead of prioritising the needs of the Oyo people who elected him to tackle their local issues, he has chosen to divert his attention and squander the stateās resources to pursue unhinged 2027 ambition. Makinde must know that Nigeriaās scale and complexities demand more than his vain and self-indulgent ambition.
āMakinde cannot even speak for the people of Oyo state regarding their future electoral choices or decisions, let alone speak for Nigerians. Makinde and his partisan cohorts are only worried that the looming transformation and prosperity fromĀ President Tinubuās economic policies will consign their 2027 ambitions and calculations into the trash bin of political irrelevance.
āWe urge Nigerians to continue to stand firm in support of President Tinubu as the administrationās reform policies begin to yield the desired benefits for all Nigerians.ā
