Millions of Americans cast their votes in this historic race, which could see the Republican returning to the White House or Democrat Kamala Harris becoming the first woman to serve as U.S. president.

Polls have closed in most states, and early projections are being reported throughout the night.
North Carolina, now projected for Trump, is one of seven battleground states considered essential for winning the presidency.
In the remaining states, Trump currently leads in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, and Wisconsin, while Harris holds an advantage in Michigan.
What current results show
Voting continues in some areas, but counting is underway in several states where polls have already closed.
Although not all votes are in, projections can now be made in several states.
Harris is projected to have won California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, and Washington, giving her a projected 189 Electoral College votes.
Trump, meanwhile, is projected to have secured Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wyoming, totaling an estimated 230 Electoral College votes.
NBC News reports that Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin are still too close to call.
