On Thursday, Iran described Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election as a potential opportunity for the U.S. to reevaluate its past “mistaken policies.”
Trump, who is set to return to the White House in January after defeating Vice President Kamala Harris in Tuesday’s election, had previously implemented a “maximum pressure” approach toward Iran during his first term.
“We have had very bitter experiences with the policies and approaches of various U.S. administrations,” foreign ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei stated, as reported by state news agency IRNA. He added that Trump’s win could provide a chance “to review previous mistaken policies.”

The United States and Iran have been adversaries since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which removed the Western-backed shah, but tensions surged during Trump’s first term from 2017 to 2021.
Prior to Trump’s victory announcement on Wednesday, Iran dismissed the significance of the U.S. election outcome.
“The general policies of the United States and the Islamic Republic of Iran remain unchanged,” said government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohajerani. “It doesn’t matter who becomes president. Plans are already set to avoid any impact on people’s livelihoods,” she added.
During his first term, Trump withdrew the U.S. from the 2015 Iran nuclear deal and enforced severe sanctions on Iran. In 2020, under his administration, the U.S. carried out an airstrike that killed General Qasem Soleimani of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps at Baghdad airport.
