President Joe Biden met with President-elect Donald Trump and expressed his anticipation for a “smooth transition” in January, assuring that he would “make sure” both his predecessor and successor are accommodated as he prepares to retake the White House.
The last time Trump was in the Oval Office, he left behind a two-page letter to Biden, written in his distinctive, jagged handwriting, tucked into the drawer of the Resolute Desk. Despite the note’s surprisingly gracious tone, Trump exited the building bitter and defeated.
However, on Wednesday, Trump returned to the White House under dramatically different circumstances, buoyed by a likely popular vote victory in the recent election and energized by his return to political power.

As a fire crackled in the background of the Oval Office, Biden congratulated Trump on his victory, offering no sign of the bitterness that may have lingered in his thoughts.
“Congratulations,” Biden said to his predecessor and successor—someone Biden has often described as a clear threat to democracy.
“I’m looking forward to having, like we said, a smooth transition,” Biden added, making a promise that was not extended to him when he took office four years ago.
“Welcome back,” he concluded.
After shaking hands, Trump acknowledged the toughness of politics but remarked, “It’s a nice world today.” He echoed Biden’s hopes for a transition “as smooth as it can get.” The two men appeared to share a moment of light-heartedness, joking about the barrage of questions shouted at them by reporters in the room, though neither responded.
