How My South African Partner Duped Me Of $3.5m In Kenya - Murray-Bruce

Ben Murray-Bruce, the founder of the Silverbird Group, has shared the story of how he was defrauded of $3.5 million by his South African business partner in a deal involving the purchase of a cinema complex in Kenya.

Although he did not reveal the identity of his partner, Murray-Bruce explained that after transferring the $3.5 million, the South African partner registered the business in his own name.

The former Senator for Bayelsa East made this revelation during his speech at the fourth edition of the Peace Anyiam-Osigwe Nigeria Digital Content Regulation Conference, which took place on Thursday in Victoria Island, Lagos State.

He said, “I was called to buy a cinema complex in Kenya for $3.5 million. I transferred the money and my South African partner registered it in his name. That was how I lost that huge investment.

“I have a studio in Los Angeles and I am battling with litigation with one of the most prominent actors in Hollywood.”

The media mogul expressed his interest in entering the movie production world, revealing that he is currently working on a film script that will tackle pressing societal issues.

He emphasized the importance of nurturing creativity, sharing a memorable experience from a visit to Ajegunle, Lagos, where he witnessed a group of children engaged in a fight.

He pointed out that these children—whom he referred to as “future leaders”—were learning resilience, yet some people might label them as troublemakers.

He highlighted that many of today’s entertainment industry leaders in the U.S. came from similar backgrounds, including places like Ajegunle.

“The entertainment industry is a very successful one. In all the things I have done, I have never made one move about movie making but now, I will. I am working on a script and I know we will get it right. We will deal with fundamental issues.”

The passing of Anyiam-Osigwe, a distinguished Nigerian filmmaker and founder of the African Movie Academy Awards, was announced on January 10, 2023.

A former lawmaker also honored the late Anyiam-Osigwe, reminiscing about how she would often visit him at his home, riding her bicycle.

“Peace came to my house one day and asked me why I abandoned entertainment and became a politician. I have known her since she was six years old. She used to come to our house on her bicycle. Her brothers also used to come riding theirs,” he said.
