A clash between policemen and a soldier in Ebonyi led to the death of a bystander on Wednesday.
The incident occurred at the Ugwuachara area of the town after a confrontation between officers conducting a ‘stop and search’ operation and a soldier on a motorbike.
According to an eyewitness, the soldier refused to undergo a search when the policemen attempted to seize his bike.

The ensuing altercation resulted in the fatal shooting of one passerby, while three others were injured during the struggle between the soldier and the police officers.
Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police, CP Anthonia Uche-Anya, confirmed the incident.
She stated that both the soldier and the policeman involved are in police custody, and an investigation has been launched into the matter.
“Policemen on stop and search stop the purported soldier at that time, wanted to search him, he refused and there was a scuffle between them,” the CP said.
“The soldier was trying to disarm one of the police operatives and the bullet went off and hit a bystander. It’s not as if they just opened fire on an innocent bystander, just that during the scuffle, the bullet went off and hit by-stander.”
The CP confirmed that the three injured individuals had been transported to the hospital and were responding to treatment, while the body of the deceased was taken to the morgue.
“One dead and three are injured but they’re responding to treatment. The ones that are in the hospital are responding to treatment.
“We’ve confirmed the purported soldier is a soldier, both the soldier and the policeman are in our custody and we’re investigating,” Uche-Anya added.
