Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe has stated that Nigeria would have been in a better position today if Peter Obi, the Labour Party candidate in the 2023 presidential election, had won.
Abaribe, who represents Abia South in the Senate, argued that the nepotism prevalent under President Bola Tinubu’s administration would not have existed under Obi’s leadership.
“If Peter Obi had won, you probably would have seen a better Nigeria than what we are seeing today, Abaribe said on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Monday.
“Number one, he would not be as nepotistic as this government, he won’t, it’s not in him. That is just who we are, we feel for the other people.”

Senator Abaribe has renewed his accusations of nepotism against President Bola Tinubu, questioning his decision to appoint four ministers from Ogun State, while many other states are only represented by a single minister.
Abaribe compared Tinubu’s actions to those of former President Buhari, claiming that while Buhari’s nepotism was widely acknowledged, it worsened under Tinubu because, unlike Buhari, few spoke out against it at the time.
Rather than relying on future presidents to be fair to the South-East, Abaribe urged the people of the region to take matters into their own hands. He suggested it was time for the South-East to focus on revitalizing the region—making it more livable, cohesive, and prosperous, rather than waiting for outside intervention.
The Senator also reflected on the history of presidential fairness toward the South-East, pointing out that aside from Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, no other leader has been genuinely fair to the region.
He emphasized that the people of the South-East could no longer afford to wait for such fairness.
Commenting on the arrest of Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed Prime Minister of Biafra in exile, Abaribe welcomed the development.
He said the arrest should send a strong message to those inciting violence back home, particularly those influenced by Ekpa’s rhetoric. Abaribe noted that Ekpa, after his arrest, had denied his role as the Biafran Prime Minister, further distancing himself from the violent movements he had helped fuel.
The Senator also addressed the ongoing violence in the South-East, asserting that it could end with the release of Nnamdi Kanu. He argued that many of those perpetrating violence in Kanu’s name would lose their motivation once Kanu is freed.
