An Ado-Ekiti Magistrate Court on Wednesday ordered the remand of Lagos-based human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi, over allegations of defamation against Aare Afe Babalola SAN, the founder of Afe Babalola University.
Farotimi, who was arrested on Tuesday at his office in Lagos by officers from the Ekiti State Police Command, was charged with publishing a book titled Nigeria and Its Criminal Justice System, in which he allegedly accused Aare Afe Babalola of corrupting the judiciary and securing judgments from the Supreme Court through improper means.
The allegations were said to have subjected Babalola to hatred, contempt, ridicule, and damaged his hard-earned reputation.

Farotimi pleaded not guilty to all sixteen charges.
The police prosecutor, Samson Osun, requested the remand of Farotimi in prison custody pending the outcome of further investigations, citing the need for security maintenance.
However, Farotimi’s lawyer, Dayo Akeredolu, opposed the remand request, urging the court to grant bail on liberal terms, emphasizing that the case was bailable and that the defendant, being a public figure, posed no threat. Akeredolu argued that the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
In his ruling, the presiding magistrate, Abayomi Adeosun, ordered Farotimi’s remand in prison custody and adjourned the hearing until December 10.
