Macron Takes Action After Calls For Him To Resign As French President

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron dismissed calls for his resignation as a way to resolve the political deadlock in the country, describing such a scenario as “political fiction.”

“It doesn’t make sense… it’s frankly not up to scratch to say these things,” Macron, whose government faces a no confidence vote in parliament on Wednesday, told reporters on the sidelines of a visit to Saudi Arabia.

“It so happens that if I am before you, it is because I was elected twice by the French people. I am extremely proud of this and I will honour this trust with all the energy that is mine until the last second to be useful to the country,” added Macron, who is due to serve until 2027.

Several key opposition figures, as well as some voices within the presidential camp, have suggested that resignation may be Macron’s only realistic course of action.

Macron also accused the far-right National Rally (RN), led by Marine Le Pen, of “unacceptable cynicism” for supporting the motion that could bring down Prime Minister Michel Barnier’s government.

“We must not scare people with these things, we have a strong economy,” he added.

While many commentators expect the left and far-right to join forces to topple the government, Macron seemed to remain optimistic, stating that he “could not believe” the no-confidence motion would pass.
