As plenary resumed at the House of Representatives on Thursday, five lawmakers from the Labour Party (LP) defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The defectors include Esosa Iyawe (Edo), Tochukwu Okere (Imo), Donatus Matthew (Kaduna), Bassey Akiba (Cross River), and Daulyop Fom (Plateau). Additionally, Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu (Delta), a lawmaker, left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to join the APC.
The lawmakers cited internal divisions within the Labour Party as the primary reason for their defection.

Despite the Labour Party’s remarkable success in the 2023 elections, securing six Senate seats and over 34 House of Representatives seats, the party has faced significant challenges.
Established over two decades ago, the LP made significant strides in mainstream politics during the 2023 elections, a stark contrast to the 2019 National Assembly elections, where it won no seats.
With LP presidential candidate Peter Obi finishing third in the presidential race, many had anticipated the party would form a strong opposition alongside the PDP against the ruling APC. However, internal disputes within the party have since undermined its unity.
