Tinubu Speaks With Ghana’s President-Elect, John Dramani Mahama

President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ghana’s President-elect, John Dramani Mahama, following his victory in the December 7 general election.

In a phone conversation with Mahama, Tinubu expressed hope that Mahama’s second term would contribute to further stability within the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).

A statement issued by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga conveyed that Tinubu commended the Ghanaian people for their unwavering commitment to democracy, which was reflected in the peaceful and successful conduct of both the presidential and parliamentary elections.

Tinubu praised Ghanaians for reaffirming to the world that democracy remains the best pathway to achieving political stability, economic progress, social justice, and transparent governance across Africa.

He also reiterated that Nigeria, along with the entire region, continues to uphold the principles of democratic choice, which remains a source of pride for the people.

Additionally, Tinubu lauded Mahama’s main opponent, Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for gracefully conceding defeat even before the official announcement by the Ghanaian Electoral Commission.

He noted that Bawumia’s actions highlighted Ghana’s strong democratic values.

Tinubu further emphasized that Mahama’s return to the presidency—after previously serving from 2012 to 2017—demonstrates the trust the Ghanaian people have in his leadership and vision for the country’s future.

Mahama, who served as Ghana’s Vice President from 2009 to 2012, was also a Member of Parliament from 1997 to 2009, and held various deputy and ministerial positions between 1998 and 2001.
