The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has issued a warning to Nigerians about a banking malware that targets users worldwide through sophisticated phishing campaigns.
The advisory was released by NITDA’s Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team on Monday.
According to the agency, the latest version of the Grandoreiro malware poses a serious threat, employing advanced techniques like screen overlay attacks and remote device control to steal sensitive information, including banking credentials and personal data.
NITDA explained that the malware is primarily spread through phishing emails and fraudulent websites, which trick users into downloading malicious software disguised as legitimate updates or documents.

Once installed, the malware bypasses security measures, granting attackers unauthorized access to users’ devices. NITDA cautioned that this could lead to financial losses and identity theft.
The agency urged the public to be vigilant and implement recommended security measures to reduce the risk.
“Cyber threats like Grandoreiro are evolving, and users need to stay vigilant and adopt robust security practices to protect their information,” the agency advised.
NITDA advises steering clear of links and attachments in emails from unknown senders, downloading software exclusively from reputable sources, and enabling multifactor authentication to protect online banking and financial accounts.
The agency also underscores the need to keep antivirus software up to date, refrain from using public Wi-Fi for financial transactions, and regularly check bank accounts for any suspicious activity.
