The House of Representatives has officially declared the seat of Dennis Idahosa, currently serving as the Deputy Governor of Edo State, vacant.
Speaker Abbas Tajudeen made the announcement on Wednesday following the reading of a letter from the Majority Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, during the plenary session.

Section 68(1) of the 1999 Constitution states:
“A member of the Senate or of the House of Representatives shall vacate his seat in the House of which he is a member if—
‘He becomes President, Vice-President, Governor, Deputy Governor or a Minister of the Government of the Federation or a Commissioner of the Government of a State or a Special Adviser.’”
Mr. Idahosa, who previously represented the Ovia North East/Ovia South West Federal Constituency of Edo State, was sworn in as the Deputy Governor of Edo State on November 12.
Following the official declaration by the House, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is now authorized to set a date for a by-election to fill the vacant position.

In a related development, Senate President Godswill Akpabio declared the seat of Senator Monday Okpebholo, who represents Edo Central Senatorial District, vacant.
This announcement follows Senator Okpebholo’s election as Governor of Edo State, marking his departure from the 10th Senate.
Akpabio also directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to organize elections promptly to fill the vacancy, ensuring that the people of Edo Central continue to have Senate representation.
