Another LP Reps Defects To APC

The defection was announced in a letter read aloud by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, during Thursday’s plenary session.

In the letter, Ajang cited internal crises within the Labour Party as the reason for his decision to switch allegiance.

The announcement sparked a commotion in the House, with some lawmakers expressing concerns about the contents of the letter.

Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda raised an objection, arguing that the letter did not comply with the House’s constitutional procedures and should therefore be rejected.

Chinda emphasized that any member wishing to defect must first inform their constituents and party members, in accordance with the House’s standing orders, before the letter is read.

However, the Speaker overruled Chinda’s objection, allowing the letter to be admitted.

Meanwhile, former Minister of Labour and Employment, and current Senator representing Plateau South, Simon Lalong, was present in the House to witness the defection and show support for Ajang.

The House had suspended its rules to allow Lalong, a member of the Senate, to attend the session.

Ajang’s defection adds to the growing list of federal lawmakers who have left the Labour Party for the ruling APC.

Just days earlier, Dalyop Chollom, the lawmaker representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency, also defected to the APC, citing the ongoing crisis within the Labour Party as his reason.

Several weeks ago, four other members of the House of Representatives made similar moves, all pointing to internal discord in the LP.

In response to the defections, the Labour Party has threatened legal action, asserting that the defections are unconstitutional.
