Asue Ighodalo, the gubernatorial candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Edo State, has threatened legal action against Jarrett Tenebe, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Edo, over alleged defamatory statements.
In a letter issued by the law firm Banwo & Ighodalo, Ighodalo accused Tenebe of making false and damaging claims in a widely circulated video.
The controversy stemmed from Tenebe’s response to a verbal slip-up by Governor Monday Okpebholo during his presentation of the 2025 state budget to the Edo State Assembly.

While the governor struggled to read the total sum of the budget, repeatedly stumbling over the figures, he eventually remarked, “Sorry, it’s confusing me,” which prompted laughter in the chamber.
The incident quickly gained traction on social media, with many users commenting on the governor’s gaffe.
In the aftermath, Tenebe, in an apparent bid to capitalize on the moment, accused Ighodalo of embezzling billions, a statement Ighodalo’s legal team has denounced as defamatory and baseless.
Ighodalo has vowed to take legal action unless the accusation is retracted.
In the video he released over the incident, Tenebe had said: “Obaseki will not make such a mistake because he has stolen billions before. Asue Ighodalo will not make such a mistake because he has stolen billions before…”
In his response, Ighodalo demanded that Tenebe issue a full retraction, a public apology, and provide assurances that no further defamatory statements would be made within seven days.

This is not the first time Tenebe has garnered attention for making controversial remarks.
Earlier this year, during a widely criticized appearance on Arise TV, Tenebe insulted the people of Edo State, claiming they were “too poor to afford DSTV.”
More recently, Tenebe sparked further controversy during a heated online exchange with the PDP’s Campaign Council Director of New Media, Pharez Okpere.
In response to Okpere’s criticism of Governor Okpebholo, Tenebe threatened him, stating, “If I asked you to leave and you refused, you will be killed.”
The statement led to widespread condemnation, with Okpere filing a petition with the Police and the DSS, citing a threat to his life.
