Bayern Munich suffered their first Bundesliga defeat under coach Vincent Kompany on Saturday, falling 2-1 to Mainz.

The loss allowed defending champions Bayer Leverkusen to close the gap at the top of the table to just four points, following their 2-0 win over Augsburg.

Lee Jae-sung scored for Mainz in both halves against a Bayern side that was unusually off form.

Kane’s absence was particularly noticeable in the first half as Bayern dominated possession but struggled to convert half chances into goals.

Mainz, who had a solid home record against Bayern, took the lead just before halftime. Lee capitalized on a poor clearance by his South Korean teammate, Min-Jae Kim, to score.

Despite knowing that Leverkusen were ahead in Augsburg, Bayern came out flat after the break, lacking precision and energy. Mainz took advantage with Lee scoring again after a well-placed cross from Armindo Sieb, firing home on the spin.

Leroy Sane gave Bayern a glimmer of hope with a goal in the 87th minute, tapping in a deflected Joshua Kimmich shot, but Mainz held firm to secure a famous victory.

The win lifted Mainz to sixth in the standings.

Leverkusen continued their impressive run with a 2-0 victory at Augsburg, their seventh consecutive win.

Martin Terrier opened the scoring in the 14th minute with a curling shot following a low cross from Jeremie Frimpong. Florian Wirtz doubled the lead in the 40th minute with a well-executed shot after dummying the Augsburg defense.

In other action, Borussia Mönchengladbach triumphed 4-1 over Holstein Kiel, with Alassane Plea scoring twice and Robin Hack and Tim Kleindienst also finding the net.

Gladbach have now lost just once in their last eight league games, while Kiel, in their first top-flight season, remain second from bottom.

In Saturday’s late game, St. Pauli hosted Werder Bremen, while Borussia Dortmund, Stuttgart, and RB Leipzig were all in action on Sunday.
