The year 2025 is set to begin on a high note, but for those who struggle to part with their older gadgets, especially smartphones, the start of the year may bring some unwelcome news.
On January 1, 2025, WhatsApp will cease to function on devices running older operating systems, particularly Android versions that can’t be upgraded.
This change comes as part of WhatsApp’s ongoing effort to ensure compatibility with newer software.
According to Metro.co.uk, the first major compatibility update will take effect on January 1, 2025, when WhatsApp will no longer support Android’s KitKat OS and earlier versions.
This means that certain older smartphones will no longer be able to run the app.
While the number of affected users is expected to be relatively small, it will mainly impact those who continue using their older devices until they completely wear out.
Will Your Phone Be Affected?
Android:
If your Android phone is running KitKat (Android 4.4) or an older version, you may still be able to use WhatsApp—provided your device is eligible for an OS upgrade. However, if your phone can’t be updated, you’ll find yourself unable to access WhatsApp starting January 1, 2025.
Here are some of the Android devices affected by the January 1 change:
- Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
- Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E (2014)
- HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
- LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
- Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V
iPhones:
Later in 2025, WhatsApp will stop supporting older iPhones as well. Starting on May 5, 2025, the app will no longer work on iPhones running iOS versions earlier than 15.1. While some older iPhones can be updated to a newer iOS version, others, like the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus, can only be updated to iOS 12.5.7, meaning WhatsApp will stop working on those devices from May 5 onwards.
This update applies to both the regular WhatsApp app and WhatsApp Business, which share the same system requirements.
Why the Change?
Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, explains that these updates are part of a routine effort to ensure the app remains secure, functional, and compatible with newer devices. While this may be inconvenient for some users, the goal is to improve performance and security across the platform.
