Why Okpebholo Orchestrated My Removal – Impeached Council Chairman

Paul Iyoha, the impeached Chairman of Esan Central Local Government Area in Edo State, has accused Governor Senator Monday Okpebholo of masterminding his removal from office.

Iyoha’s impeachment marks the fourth case of a local government chairman and their deputy being removed under Okpebholo’s leadership.

In a press briefing in Benin, the embattled chairman stated his intention to challenge the impeachment in court.

Describing the process as illegal, Iyoha emphasized that he was denied a fair hearing prior to his suspension by the Edo State House of Assembly.

He said “my sin”  was my political allegiance to Dr. Asue Ighodalo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gubernatorial candidate in the 2024 elections.

He argued that his impeachment was fueled by political vendetta rather than genuine concerns about governance.

“My only offence was standing by my party candidate instead of supporting Governor Okpebholo, who hails from the same ward in Esan Central as myself.

“As a loyal member, I was duty-bound to support my party’s candidate. It is not a crime to work for one’s party. However, the governor has taken my political stance personally and is using his office to punish me.”

Iyoha, however, asserted that these actions were part of a larger attempt to silence opposition voices in the state.
