The relief, known as Temporary Protected Status (TPS), is designed for individuals who would face extreme hardship if forced to return to countries affected by armed conflict or natural disasters.
These protections apply only to people already residing in the U.S. and have been designated by both Republican and Democratic administrations.
The latest extension affects individuals from El Salvador, Sudan, Ukraine, and Venezuela, granting them an additional 18 months of protection starting from the expiration of the current status.

This allows them to remain in the U.S. and continue working with valid permits.
During his first term, Trump sought to end TPS for El Salvador and other countries, but faced legal challenges in the process.
Immigrant advocates and Democratic lawmakers have been urging the Biden administration to do more to safeguard immigrants who fear losing their status and ability to work when Trump assumes office.
The TPS protections for nationals from El Salvador, Ukraine, Venezuela, and Sudan were set to expire in the spring, but the Biden administration is expected to renew them ahead of Trump’s inauguration.
The Secretary of Homeland Security must decide at least 60 days prior to the expiration date whether to extend or end the designation based on the conditions in each country.
The decision offers relief to approximately 232,000 Salvadorans, 1,900 Sudanese, 104,000 Ukrainians, and 600,000 Venezuelans, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
However, Friday’s announcement does not expand the eligibility for TPS.
