Trump sought the same help he had in the past—at the eleventh hour, he asked the U.S. Supreme Court to intervene and halt the case.

His previous encounters with the court have been favorable, such as when it blocked his prosecution over the January 6th attack by ruling that presidents should be immune from prosecution for official acts.
If that was a measure of his influence over the highest court, it didn’t extend as far as he hoped this time.
The proceedings in Manhattan’s Bowery were a throwback to when Trump’s legal troubles were an everyday saga, a president-elect embroiled in courtroom drama.
While the circumstances have shifted, Trump’s rhetoric remains unchanged.
He joined the court session via video call, presenting himself as a president-in-waiting, lashing out against the proceedings.
A courtroom monitor displayed him sitting alongside his attorney, Todd Blanche.
Trump denounced the trial, saying, “This has been a political witch hunt. It was done to damage my reputation so I would lose the election.”
It’s a refrain we’ve heard before—and likely will again.
His legal team continues to appeal the conviction, which stemmed from falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, allegedly to conceal an affair.
Trump contends that the case involved official presidential actions, and thus, he should be immune from prosecution.
This will be a matter for the appellate courts to decide, adding yet another legal challenge to Trump’s already extensive list.
But this is all too late for his inauguration—and that, no doubt, is weighing on him.
