Trump denounced the trial, saying, “This has been a political witch hunt. It was done to damage my reputation so I would lose the election.”
It’s a refrain we’ve heard before—and likely will again.
His legal team continues to appeal the conviction, which stemmed from falsifying business records to cover up hush-money payments to porn star Stormy Daniels, allegedly to conceal an affair.
Trump contends that the case involved official presidential actions, and thus, he should be immune from prosecution.
This will be a matter for the appellate courts to decide, adding yet another legal challenge to Trump’s already extensive list.
But this is all too late for his inauguration—and that, no doubt, is weighing on him.
