A heated confrontation unfolded in the National Assembly on Thursday during the 2025 budget defense session as Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, presented the Nigeria Police budget.
Tensions flared when two lawmakers pointed out discrepancies between the IGP’s presentation and the documents they had been provided.
The committee chairman’s suggestion to allow the IGP to continue while the issue was addressed was met with strong opposition, leading to a vocal argument.

The dispute escalated, with one senator ultimately walking out in protest.
Order was eventually restored, and the IGP resumed his presentation, once again advocating for the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to be removed from the restrictive envelope budget system.
He argued that the current framework hinders the Force’s ability to effectively tackle national security challenges.
In response, several lawmakers, including Senator Abdul Ningi, argued that the “envelope system” was never legally established nor ratified by the National Assembly and should remain in place as the standard.
Other lawmakers, however, voiced support for revisiting the police’s budgeting approach, calling for a more flexible, needs-based model of funding.
