Following Sunday’s humiliating 3-1 defeat to Brighton, Ruben Amorim admitted that his Manchester United flops are the worst side in the club’s history.
United suffered their sixth defeat in 11 Premier League games since Amorim joined from Sporting Lisbon to replace the dismissed Erik ten Hag.
“We are the worst team maybe in the history of Manchester United,” Amorim said after his side’s wretched display at Old Trafford.
“I know you want headlines but I am saying that because we have to acknowledge that and to change that. Here you go: your headlines.
“Imagine what this is for a fan of Manchester United. Imagine what this is for me. We are getting a new coach who is losing more than the last coach. I have full knowledge of that,” he added.
Amorim’s side sits in 13th position, and while they are 10 points above the relegation zone, Sunday’s performance suggests that they are far from assured to escape being dragged into the survival struggle.
Yankuba Minteh opened the scoring for Brighton early on, laying the groundwork for United’s dismal performance.
Bruno Fernandes levelled with a penalty before halftime, but Kaoru Mitoma and Georginio Rutter scored in the second half to send United reeling.
United have endured six home league defeats this season, the highest in the first 12 games in a season since 1893-1994.
They have also lost 10 of their 22 league games this season, marking the first time in a top-flight season that they have lost double figures since 1989-90.
While United has not yet been entirely dragged into the fight for survival, Amorim must find a way to deliver results in order to keep the pressure off him.
The 39-year-old joined at United in November, regarded as one of Europe’s most promising young coaches.
However, his preferred 3-4-3 formation does not suit the players on United’s roster.
However, while admitting that he is just concerned with avoiding relegation for now, the Portuguese coach refuses to change his mindset.
“I am not going to change, no matter what. I know we can succeed but we need to survive this moment. I am not naive. We need to survive now,” Amorim said.
