Moment Passenger Jet Carrying 64 People Collided Midair With Military Helicopter [VIDEO]

A passenger jet with 64 people aboard crashed into Washington’s Potomac River on Wednesday after colliding with a military helicopter.

Reports from US media indicate that multiple bodies were retrieved from the cold, dark water.

A large search and rescue operation was underway, with divers visible under bright lights as they searched through the wreckage of both aircraft in the frigid waters.

Washington Fire Chief John Donnelly stated that around 300 emergency personnel were working in “extremely rough” conditions, and he hinted that the chances of finding survivors seemed slim.

Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser assured reporters that the rescue teams would continue their efforts for as long as necessary.

CBS News reported that at least 18 bodies had been recovered, while NBC noted that more than a dozen had been found.

Among the passengers were several athletes, coaches, and officials from US Figure Skating, and Moscow confirmed that Russian pair skaters Evgenia Shishkova and Vadim Naumov, who won the 1994 world title, were also aboard.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov confirmed the tragic news, stating that other Russian citizens were among the victims as well.

The Bombardier plane, operated by an American Airlines affiliate, had been approaching Reagan National Airport at around 9:00 pm (0200 GMT) after departing from Wichita, Kansas, when it collided with the Black Hawk helicopter, which was on a training flight with three soldiers aboard.

Witness Ari Schulman, who was driving at the time, described seeing a “stream of sparks” above him.

He initially saw the plane flying normally, but just moments later, it was tilted at a sharp angle, with its underside glowing bright yellow and sparking like a “Roman candle.”
