Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA) have reaffirmed their decision to remove Mudashiru Obasa as the speaker, asserting that the action is legally valid.
Obasa was removed several weeks ago due to allegations of corruption and other offenses.
Despite Obasa’s claim that he is still in charge, even after a new speaker was elected, the Lagos State Assembly reiterated on Thursday that his removal is final and legally binding.

“The Lagos State House of Assembly, as an independent arm of government, has exercised its constitutional duty in the best interest of the people of Lagos,” a statement by Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on behalf of the Lagos State Assembly read after the lawmakers honoured an invitation by the Lagos Command of the Department of State Services (DSS).
“The decision to remove the former Speaker was made through a democratic process, with the required majority as stipulated by law. Any attempt to challenge this lawful action undermines the authority granted to us by the Nigerian Constitution.”
They stated that Obasa’s removal was in accordance with the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Powers and Privileges Act, which grant the State Assembly the authority to manage its internal affairs without external interference.
“Sections 92 and 96, outline the process for the election and removal of the Speaker, and due process was followed in our decision. It is also in public knowledge that legislative autonomy was granted to State Assemblies, ensuring that elected representatives can conduct their business freely within the chambers assigned to them,” the lawmakers said.
Several members of the Lagos Assembly had been detained and interrogated by the DSS regarding matters related to the legislature. This led to a visit by other assembly members on Thursday.
After the visit, the lawmakers confirmed that their colleagues who had been summoned for questioning had been released.
“All members of the Assembly earlier detained have now regained their freedom,” the lawmaker said, commending the professionalism of the DSS.
“We appreciate the Lagos DSS Command, especially the Director, for ensuring a smooth and respectful engagement,” the statement read.
After Obasa’s removal, Mojisola Meranda was elected as the new speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
Since its establishment in 1979, the Lagos State House of Assembly has had nine different assemblies.
The most recent was inaugurated in 2019, but Meranda’s election marks the first time a female has been chosen as speaker.
Mojeed Fatai was also elected as the deputy speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly.
