On Sunday, Arsenal secured a dominant 5-1 win over defending champions Manchester City at the Emirates, closing the gap to six points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool, who have a game in hand.

In a clash between the top teams from the past two seasons, Arsenal got off to a dream start within two minutes when Manuel Akanji lost possession, and Kai Havertz set up Martin Ødegaard to score the opening goal.

Havertz later missed a golden opportunity to extend the lead, a miss that could have been costly when Erling Haaland equalized with his 250th career club goal early in the second half.

However, City struggled throughout the match and conceded just 105 seconds after the restart when a shot from Thomas Partey deflected off John Stones into the net.

Myles Lewis-Skelly, who would have been suspended after his red card in a 1-0 win over Wolves had it not been overturned, made the most of his reprieve by scoring Arsenal’s third goal, marking his first goal for the club.

Lewis-Skelly celebrated his goal by mimicking Haaland’s signature meditation pose, a nod to a previous comment from Haaland to Arsenal’s manager, Mikel Arteta, to “stay humble” after a heated 2-2 draw between the teams in September.

Havertz then sealed the win with a powerful strike into the far corner as Arsenal sliced through City’s defense on the counter-attack.

Arsenal’s rout was completed in stoppage time when another teenager, Ethan Nwaneri, curled in a goal.

The loss leaves Manchester City in fourth place, now 15 points behind the leaders, with their hopes of a fifth consecutive title realistically over.
