On Sunday, the Federal Government expressed condolences to the government and people of Germany following the death of former President Horst Köhler.
Köhler who died on February 1 at the age of 81, served as Germany’s president from 2004 to 2010.
He was particularly recognized for his efforts to enhance German-African relations.

Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed in a statement from Abuja that the death of Köhler was a significant loss to the global community.
The statement, issued by the ministry’s acting spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, highlighted Köhler’s lasting legacy in inspiring future generations.
Mr Tuggar said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria expresses its sincere condolences to the government and people of Germany, and especially to family, friends and political associates, following the death of former President Horst Köhler.
“The demise of Köhler is a great loss not only to Germany but the global community, which benefited immensely from his leadership, vision and dedication to international cooperation and development.
“The departed German leader, during his tenure as president from 2004 to 2010 and previous role as Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), demonstrated unwavering commitment to fostering global economic stability, sustainable development and multilateralism.
“More so, his contributions to strengthening Germany’s relations with Africa, including Nigeria, were particularly noteworthy, as he championed initiatives to promote peace, economic growth, and mutual understanding.
“His legacy of service, integrity and dedication to the common good will continue to inspire future generations.
“In this moment of grief, Nigeria stands in solidarity with the people of Germany.”
The minister stated that Nigeria honors the legacy of the esteemed statesman, whose life was dedicated to creating a better world.
During his presidency, Köhler championed the fight against poverty and advocated for a more humane approach to globalization.
He also fostered a partnership with Africa to enhance dialogue and cooperation between the continent and Europe.
