The Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA) has announced an increase in the fare for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system.
A notice posted by LAMATA on Thursday afternoon confirmed that the 18% fare hike would take effect next week.
“Please be informed that there will be an 18 percent increase in the bus fare on all Bus Reform Initiative (BRI) schemes,” the notice stated.

The fare increase is attributed to rising operational costs and the need to ensure the continued functioning of buses and safe transportation for passengers around Lagos.
LAMATA asked for the “understanding and cooperation” of commuters during the fare adjustment.
In November 2023, the Lagos government had canceled the 50% transport fare discount on all BRT services, reverting to previous fare levels.
“The 50% rebate in transport fare in the regulated transport system in Lagos ends on Sunday,” LAMATA had stated, informing commuters that starting from Monday, November 6, 2023, fares would return to the pre-2nd August 2023 rates.
In July 2023, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu had reduced transport fares for state-owned and commercial buses by 25% on all routes as part of efforts to mitigate the impact of the fuel subsidy removal by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
The Governor also announced that the Lagos State Government was expanding its fleet of staff buses for public service workers, which would be deployed through the Office of the Head of Service.
