Tinubu Approves Recruitment

President Bola Tinubu has authorized the recruitment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to work in correctional facilities across the country, aiming to enhance healthcare services for inmates.

This move is part of a larger initiative to address healthcare gaps within the Nigerian Correctional Service system.

The announcement was made in a statement on Thursday by Babatunde Alao, the Special Assistant to the Minister of Interior on Media.

He said, “President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, through the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has approved the employment of 50 doctors and 100 nurses to cater to the medical needs of inmates in correctional centres across the country.”

He mentioned that Tunji-Ojo also revealed that the National Youth Service Corps will now assign medical doctors to correctional centres during their service year to safeguard the health and rights of some of the nation’s most vulnerable groups.

“The Minister also announced the approval of the extension of service beyond retirement age for existing medical personnel under the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) to cover for shortfalls in the short term,” Alao added.

The Minister stated that the recruitment initiative aims to reduce unemployment while addressing a significant shortage of healthcare services in correctional facilities, especially in states like Rivers, which have faced challenges with a lack of medical staff.

“We are committed to improving the welfare of inmates and ensuring that their medical needs are met. This initiative not only serves the inmates but also provides jobs for the nation’s youth, making it a win-win situation,” the statement quoted the minister as saying.
