Supreme Court Takes Decision On Anyanwu’s Appeal

The Supreme Court has postponed further hearings in the appeal filed by the embattled National Secretary of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, until March 10.

A five-member panel of justices, led by Justice Ibrahim Saulawa, set the new date on Tuesday after delivering a ruling on Anyanwu’s motion for an expedited hearing.

Last December, the Court of Appeal in Enugu upheld a high court decision that removed Anyanwu from his position as the PDP National Secretary, confirming Chief Ude Okoye as the legitimate National Secretary of the opposition party.

In the lead judgment delivered by Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, the Court of Appeal ruled that Anyanwu’s appeal was invalid and lacked merit.

The court found that Anyanwu had violated the PDP constitution by claiming the National Secretary role after running as the PDP candidate in the 2024 Imo State governorship election.

Unhappy with the decision, Anyanwu approached the Supreme Court last month, seeking to overturn the rulings of the lower courts and have him reinstated as the legitimate PDP National Secretary.

He also filed a motion for expedited hearing and a reduction in time, emphasizing the importance of the National Secretary role.

In its ruling on the motion on Tuesday, the Supreme Court granted Anyanwu’s application and directed that court documents be served on the respondent, Aniagu Emmanuel, who must file a reply brief within three days. Anyanwu was given two days to respond to legal points raised.

However, the Supreme Court did not address the motion for a stay of execution of the Court of Appeal’s judgment at this time.
