Former Military President Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB) has expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, Presidential election, admitting that he would handle the situation differently if given another opportunity.
He made this statement during the launch of his autobiography, *“A Journey in Service,”* in Abuja on Thursday.
Following a review of the book by former Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, IBB took responsibility for the cancellation of the election, which was a two-horse race between Moshood Abiola, the Social Democratic Party (SDP) candidate, and Bashir Tofa of the National Republican Convention (NRC).

“I regret June 12. I accept full responsibility for the decisions taken and June 12 happened under my watch. Mistakes, missteps happened in quick successions,” he said.
Babangida expressed regret over the annulment of the election, acknowledging that it disrupted the process of returning to democratic leadership.
“Our nation’s march to democracy was interrupted, a fact that I deeply regret. But Nigeria survived and democracy is still alive, a testament to our resilience and commitment to progress. This book is part of my personal story with national history,” Babangida added.
The 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the most credible in Nigeria’s history, remains a topic of ongoing debate and discussion in the country.
